Kisoro

Kisoro is approximately 76 kilometres (47 mi), by road, west of Kabale, the largest Town in the Kigezi sub-region. This is approximately 484 kilometres (301 mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, the capital of Uganda and the country's largest city.

The geographical coordinates of Kisoro are 1°17'06.0"S, 29°41'06.0"E (Latitude:-1.2850; Longitude:29.6850). Kisoro Municipal Council sits at an average elevation of 1,929 metres (6,329 ft), above mean sea level.

Kisoro is located under the peaks of the Mufumbiro ranges, which are part of the Virunga Mountains and home to rare Mountain Gorillas.


Kisoro is a rare gem which was once described as the "Pearl of Africa" and the "Switzerland of Africa" because of the Mountain sceneries that are so captivating.

The dotted Volcanic twin Lakes of Mutanda, Murehe, Chahafi and Kayumbu are some if thr attractions of Kisoro.There is more to the colorful environment with ever green vegetation which allows for provision of food throughout the year. More that fresh food markets, which are daily sight as you visit all the different parts of the district; in the south is the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park where several activities like Mountain trekking on Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.

The most coveted Mountain Gorilla and Golden Monkey tracking are available for visitors who make Kisoro their choice.

Kisoro is the nearest town to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is an access town for those traveling to Rwanda or the DRC for Gorilla tracking in the Volcanoes National Park or the Virunga National Park.

The following additional points of interest are located within the town limits or near its edges:

  • Government Offices of Kisoro District, as well as Kisoro Municipal Council.
  • Kisoro Central market which is located at the entrance to the Town.
  • Kisoro Airport, administered by the Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda.
  • Kigezi Monument which is located 3km East of Town along Kisoro-Kabale Road.
  • Lake Mutanda, located approximately 3 kilometres along Bunagana Road.
  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, for viewing mountain gorillas which has several stations in the southern sector-Nkuringo, Nyabaremura and Rushaga.
  • Nkanka Water source which is found near the DRC border.

Kisoro, nicknamed the ‘Switzerland of Africa’ for its mountains and hills, offers great tours in Uganda. You can go canoeing at Lake Mutanda or trek to see gorillas at Bwindi National Park. Other fun things to do in Kisoro include trekking for golden monkeys, hiking volcanoes like Muhabura and Sabyinyo, and exploring Batwa communities.


Bwindi National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a special place in Uganda that's protected by UNESCO. It's famous for its many different plants and animals, especially the mountain gorillas that live there. The park is pretty big, covering about 331 square kilometers, and has both high and low forests, which means it's home to lots of different kinds of life.


The coolest thing about Bwindi is the mountain gorillas. People come from all over to see them. You can join a group with a guide to go look for them in the wild. But you need to get a permit first, and there are rules to keep everyone, including the gorillas, safe


Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a special place in southwest Uganda, covering about 33.7 square kilometers. It's part of a big area called the Virunga Massif that also has parks in Rwanda and Congo.

People love Mgahinga because it has rare mountain gorillas. There's one group of gorillas that's used to people, so visitors can hike in the forest to see them.

Besides gorillas, Mgahinga has other cool things to do like watching birds, hiking, and meeting the Batwa pygmies, who are local forest people. The park has rocky mountains, green forests, and lots of different plants and animals


Lake Mutanda

Lake Mutanda is a beautiful lake found in southwestern Uganda, close to Rwanda. It's surrounded by the Virunga Mountains, with big peaks like Mount Muhabura and Mount Muhavura. The lake is famous for its stunning looks, with clear water that reflects the greenery and mountains.

Tourist can do lots of fun stuff around Lake Mutanda, like watching birds, hiking, paddling in canoes, and learning about the local culture. Also, it's a great place to start a trip to see gorillas in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where these rare mountain gorillas live

Lake Chahafi - A top birding destination in Kisoro, Uganda

Lake Chahafi sits in western Uganda, close to the Congo border. Though not as famous as some other lakes, it's starting to catch eyes for its pretty views and chances for tourism. All around the lake, there are lots of green plants, and it's a great spot for bird lovers since many birds live there. People also like to fish and go boating on the lake, making it a calm place for folks who want to relax surrounded by nature.

Echuya Forest Reserve

Echuya Forest Reserve sits in southwestern Uganda, close to Rwanda. It's in a big area called the Albertine Rift, known for having lots of different plants and animals. Echuya is famous for its bamboo forests and is where you can find endangered mountain gorillas and other monkeys like golden monkeys. It's also really important for providing water to nearby communities and helping farmers. People can visit Echuya for activities like hiking and watching birds, which helps protect the environment and supports local businesses.

HOW TO GET TO KISORO?


Kisoro is easy to get to by either flying or driving. If you're coming from Entebbe Airport or Kampala, the drive takes about 9 to 10 hours. Driving from Kampala is enjoyable, passing through villages and towns, with a stop at the Uganda Equator for coffee or tea and some interesting talks and photos. You can also stop for lunch in Mbarara and enjoy the scenic views of green hills and farms along the way. If you don't fancy a long drive, you can fly from Entebbe Airport or Kajjasi Airstrip to Kisoro Airstrip. During peak tourism season, there are daily flights to Kisoro. Thinking of visiting Kisoro's tourist spots from Kigali in Rwanda? It's a popular choice now. Many tourists fly into Kigali Airport and head to Uganda for more affordable gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Since the gorilla permits are cheaper here, it's become a preferred route. From Kigali, it's just a 3 to 4-hour drive to Bwindi or Mgahinga, much closer than from Entebbe or Kampala, which takes around 10 hours. You can cross the border at Cyanika or Katuna.
